Asialink Webinar Series: Australia-China Relations and the Albanese Visit

By

In light of PM Albanese’s visit to China, Asialink hosted a webinar to discuss the current state of the Australia-China bilateral relationship and expectations for 2024.

Anthony Albanese became the first prime minister to travel to China in seven years, marking a warming in Australia-China relations. During their wide-ranging meeting, Albanese was expected to convince Xi Jinping to end the remaining tariffs on Australian imports and release imprisoned Australians. Many hope that the visit, coinciding with the 50-year anniversary of Gough Whitlam establishing diplomatic ties with China, will stabilise relations going forward.

On 14 November 2023, Asialink's webinar reflected on the perceived success of the meeting between Albanese and Xi Jinping within both China and Australia. Panellists focused on a moving forward of the bilateral relationship, examining further trust-building measures and areas of mutually beneficial cooperation. The webinar also considered broader geo-strategic challenges.
