China’s investment has made significant contributions to the growth of mining, renewable energy, commercial real estate, infrastructure and healthcare in Australia, with these sectors attracting the majority of Chinese capital.

Chinese inbound investment in Australia reached $AUD15.4 billion in 2016. However, according to the report “Demystifying Chinese Investment in Australia” by KPMG and the University of Sydney, the value of investment from China dropped to 36 per cent to $8.2 billion in 2018 as Chinese authorities tightened the regulation on investing overseas. This downward trend was mirrored in the US where Chinese investment dropped from $29.4 billion in 2017 to $2 billion in 2018.
