Asialink Nuclear Risks in Asia and the Pacific Webinar Series

Asialink proudly convened 'The Nuclear Risk Webinar Series', covering three webinars: 'Nuclear Risks in the Indo-Pacific', 'Reducing Nuclear Risks: Envisioning a Regional Strategy' and 'Emerging Nuclear Risks: Confrontation and Deterrence in Asia and the Pacific' held from September to November 2023.

Featuring experts in the field, the webinars shed light on critical aspects of the nuclear security landscape in the Asia-Pacific while exploring opportunities for Australian nuclear diplomacy.

The series began on 6 September 2023, with 'Nuclear Risks in the Indo-Pacific'. It initiated discussions on the state of the nuclear security environment in the Asia-Pacific, presenting insightful perspectives from experts, including Asialink Chair and former Secretary of DFAT, Peter Varghese AO FAIIA, and the Hon. Gareth Evans AC FC FASSA FAIIA, former Minister for Foreign Affairs.

On 16 October 2023, 'Emerging Nuclear Risks: Confrontation and Deterrence in Asia and the Pacific' delved into emerging regional areas of nuclear tension and Australia's role and responsibilities within this dynamic. The webinar featured insights from experts such as the former Director-General of the Australian Safeguards and Non-Proliferation Office, John Carlson AM, Dr. Fiona Cunningham from the University of Pennsylvania, and Sam Roggeveen, the Director of the Lowy Institute’s International Security Program.

The series concluded on 6 November 2023, with 'Reducing Nuclear Risks: Envisioning a Regional Strategy'. The webinar explored strategic opportunities for Australia’s engagement in mitigating nuclear risks, featuring discussions with Graeme Dobell, Senior Fellow at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, Dr. Marianne Hanson, Honorary Professor of International Relations at the University of Queensland, Australia, and Co-Chair of ICAN Australia, Professor Andrew O’Neil, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Law and Business at the Australian Catholic University, and Dr. Benjamin Zala, Fellow/Senior Lecturer at the Department of International Relations, Australian National University.
