Chinese influence and how to use it to Australia's advantage

In a recent opinion piece in the Australian Finical Review, Asialink Board member John Denton and Professor Peter Drysdale write that Australia must reject old Cold War thinking and dichotomies and work towards building a trust based relationship with China. While there are clear system wide differences in Chinese and Australian perspectives, the authors argue that the two governments have significant economic and security common cause and goals. What might prevent close ties between Australia and China from delivering their economic and political benefits, with heavy consequences, is failure to do the thinking needed about how to manage the relationship.
