Melbourne hosts delegation from O.P Jindal Global University, India

Co-Director of Asia Australia Mental Health, Julia Fraser, hosted three colleagues from the Jindal Institute of Behavioural Sciences (JIBS) of O.P Jindal Global University India to explore ways that the two Universities can work together to help close the ever increasing mental health treatment gap in India.

From 11 – 15 September, AAMH hosted three colleagues from the Jindal Institute of Behavioural Sciences (JIBS) of O.P Jindal Global University India to explore ways that the two Universities can work together to help close the ever increasing mental health treatment gap in India.

Over the course of the week, The Principal Director of the Institute, Professor Sanjeev Sahni, and his Deputy Director Assistant Professor Manjushree Palit and Assistant Director Dr Mohita Junnarkar, Assistant Director, visited a wide range of medical and non - medical facilities across Melbourne that have a focus on positive mental health promotion and patient-centered care.

Key personnel from the police, school education, community mental health services, prominent NGO’s and leading academics spoke openly about the challenges and successes they experience as they design, develop, research and in many cases implement appropriate mental health interventions.

The delegation also visited and met with representatives of the Faculty of Dentistry, Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Melbourne, St. Vincent’s Mental Health, St Georges Hospital, Forensicare, Victoria Police, Parkwood Green Primary School, Alzheimer’s Australia and BeyondBlue.

“The week has given us insights into the many common challenges that India and Australia face in attempting to meet the needs of people who have mental illnesses in our communities. We have been inspired by many of the committed mental health leaders we have met and look forward to working with AAMH on ways to include many of their creative approaches to recovery focused care for use in India” said Professor Sanjeev Sahni.
