Kate Justs' Visual Diary: An artist in India

Kate Just is a visual artist who uses knitting, textiles and photography to explore feminist perspectives. Currently on a six week Asialink residency to Sanskriti Foundation in New Delhi, the artist has been documenting her research, public programs and experiences in India via Instagram.

During her residency at Sanskriti Kala Kendra, Kate Just has created a 'memory quilt,' comprised of detailed stitched fragments of text and images on brightly coloured and heavily patterned Indian fabrics. To make the quilt, the artist has collected images and stories of her own and those of other women she met on her travels.

The artist has juxtaposed these with images and texts from Indian women activists and artists. Included are references to Hindu goddesses, texts gleaned from bride ads, advertisements for women's health tonics and women run taxi companies, as well as slogans and signs from Delhi's 2016 Queer Pride event.
