Workshop details

This workshop provides teachers, lecturers, tutors, staff and faculty working in primary, secondary and higher education settings with essential strategies for effectively engaging with Chinese international students. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the cultural backgrounds, motivations and educational expectations of Chinese students studying abroad. We compare Chinese and Australian education systems in terms of supports, academic advising, dorm life, grading and assessment, and structural differences.

Key topics include building cultural awareness to enhance communication, facilitating active classroom participation while respecting hierarchical dynamics, supporting academic success through tailored teaching approaches and guidance on academic integrity. The workshop also explores strategies to support Chinese international students to engage with local Australian society through cultural orientation, social media use and career counselling. Through interactive discussions, participants will develop actionable strategies to foster supportive and inclusive learning environments for Chinese international students in educational settings.
