State of the Nation: Japan
Startups, Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Japan and Australia

Date: Wednesday 18 October 2017
Time: 12.00pm for a 12.30pm start to 2.00pm
Venue: PwC, 2 Riverside Quay, Southbank VIC 3006

The Turnbull and Abe governments have both developed strategies to promote innovation and while Australia and Japan have a proven track record of forging successful and lasting business relationships, the two countries have vastly different business cultures. What do those differences mean for the challenge of establishing the right ecosystems and innovation platforms to take our relationship to an entirely new level & beyond?

As startups, incubators and accelerators continue to establish new enterprises, what are the long-term effects for entrepreneurs and big business, and for the markets they operate in? What are the opportunities around key sectors such as Medtech (given the successful alliances established by Australian firms such as Mesoblast), as well as around social innovation? As Tokyo prepares to host the 2020 Olympics and other major sporting events in coming years, how can sports, hospitality and event management play a role in Australia and Japan’s expanding innovation partnership.

Panellists in this session will share their insights and experiences of innovation and entrepreneurship in the Japan-Australia relationship. They will discuss the obstacles and success stories so far, and the challenges and opportunities ahead. The event will also profile Innovation Dojo - a start-up community organisation set-up with the support from the University of New South Wales aimed at encouraging students to pursue new business ideas that are tailored for the Japanese market.

Expert panellists:

  • Kaoru Nishinakagawa, Co-Founder, Innovation Dojo
  • Sorato Ijichi, Founder & CEO, Creww Japan
  • Dong Lee, Business Development Manager, Creww Japan
  • Closing remarks from Jock O'Callaghan, Non-Executive Director, Australian Paralympics Committee
