South China Sea: Cross border trade and risk assessment for business
The South China Sea is one of the world’s critical commercial gateways with an estimated $3 to $5 trillion worth of trade passing through the waters each year - including more than half of Australia’s coal, iron ore and LNG exports. The area is resource rich with extensive fishing grounds and reported to hold significant oil and gas reserves. It is also the epicentre of several competing island and maritime territorial claims by several sovereign states in the region resulting in increased tensions in recent years.

The increasing tensions, if escalating further, have the potential to impact on Australia’s commercial interests and relationships in the region. It is critical for Australian business leaders to understand the complexities of the South China Sea to develop sophisticated risk assessments and strategies that will inform their business approach to key markets in the region.
