Mapping the Chinese Investment Landscape in Australia - Opportunities and Challenges

China’s investment has made significant contributions to the growth of mining, renewable energy, commercial real estate, infrastructure and healthcare in Australia, with these sectors attracting the majority of Chinese capital.

Chinese inbound investment in Australia reached $AUD15.4 billion in 2016. However, according to the report “Demystifying Chinese Investment in Australia” by KPMG and the University of Sydney, the value of investment from China dropped to $AUD13.3 billion in 2017 as Chinese authorities tightened the regulation on investing overseas. New strategic objectives were also announced as a guideline for Chinese investors, including consumer-driven demand, clean energy, advanced technology, services, and projects that align with the Belt and Road initiative.

From July 2017, in an attempt to facilitate foreign investment, Australia’s Foreign Investment Review Board introduced new amendments to the foreign investment framework, such as renewing residential exemption certificates, reducing red-tape, decreasing the number of fee-tiers and establishing the Critical Infrastructure Centre.
