City of Protest: In Conversation with Antony Dapiran

Date: Monday 9 October 2017
Time: 5.30pm - 7.30pm
Venue: Lecture Theatre 102, 1st Floor, 185 Pelham Street, The University of Melbourne

Antony Dapiran is a Hong Kong-based writer, photographer and a leading corporate finance lawyer in the Greater China region. He is a frequent commentator on Chinese business and legal matters, quoted by the Wall Street Journal and the South China Morning Post.

From the turbulent 1960s until today, Hong Kong has been a city of civil disobedience. The latest wave of protests climaxed in the Umbrella Movement in 2014. What emerges from these very public disruptions is a unique Hong Kong identity, one shaped neither by Britain nor China. An insightful exploration of the historical and social stimuli and implications of civil disobedience, City of Protest offers a compelling look at the often fraught relationship between politics and belonging, and a city’s struggle to assert itself.

Anthony will discuss City of Protest and provide a critical review on the history of dissent in Hong Kong.

We hope you are able to join us for this event.
