  • DIPLOMACY

To mark National Reconciliation Week, Asialink at The University of Melbourne is hosting an online seminar on Australia’s earliest Asia engagement, between the Macassans and Indigenous communities in Australia’s north.

Hundreds of years before Europeans established colonies in Australia, communities across Arnhem Land and the Kimberley had relationships with people from Sulawesi in Indonesia. These traders—known generally as Macassans—collaborated with indigenous communities to harvest and process trepang (sea cucumber), which was sold to China. They left a deep cultural and linguistic imprint. To learn more about the rich history of Macassan cultural exchange and trade in northern Australia, we will be joined in conversation with Dr Lyndon Ormond-Parker, an expert on indigenous cultural heritage, and William McCallum, who is currently producing Marege, a documentary film on the trade.
