Parliamentary Submissions

On May 13, 2020, the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade announced an Inquiry examining the strategic implications of the COVID-19 pandemic for Australia’s foreign affairs, defence and trade.

The Inquiry invited submissions from across a wide range of policy areas, with a specific focus on practical measures that could form an effective national framework to ensure the strength required to underpin Australia’s economic and strategic goals.

This submission, from Asialink Senior Adviser Dr Donald Greenlees, proposes a number of priority areas where action should be taken by government to ensure the Australia-Indonesia relationship emerges from the pandemic in strong shape.

It addresses two broad themes—the first, economy and development aid, and the second, political and security relations—with the intention of making a number of constructive recommendations but without attempting to be comprehensive in relation to either.
