Beyond issues of Australian drug offenders, asylum seeker arrivals and animal cruelty in abattoirs, a battle is now raging in Indonesia that presents enormous strategic and economic risk to Indonesia and its relations with the region.

Tim Lindsey, Director of the Asian Law Centre at The University of Melbourne, argues that Australia needs to do more to support a tolerant and secular Indonesia, particularly through aid to schools.
