ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Dialogue

From 28 to 30 November 2010, the third ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Dialogue was held in Kuala Lumpur. Over two days, sixty-eight delegates from Australia and New Zealand – and from across the ASEAN region –gathered to discuss economic competitiveness, major power relations and defence cooperation in the region, and non-traditional security issues, such as human trafficking.

Asialink is sponsor and a key player in the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Dialogue, convened by ISIS (Institute of Strategic and International Studies) Malaysia annually. The Dialogues are informal meetings among the ASEAN states, Australia and New Zealand that consider major issues in the Asia region, and the roles that this group can play in their resolution.

Now in its third year, the Dialogue brings together key diplomats, economists, security analysts and academics. Importantly, the Dialogues provide an opportunity for Australia and New Zealand to engage with their ASEAN counterparts at a time when the Asia region is entering a phase of significant transition.

The cultural dimensions of our regional relationships also play a central role in the annual Dialogues, which work towards deepening and strengthening people-to-people relationships. The ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Dialogues are a valuable component of Asialink’s Track II Diplomacy initiative.
