Leaders for the Asia Century: the inaugural Asialink Leaders Program Alumni Dinner
On Tuesday 23 and Thursday 25 November 2010 the first ever Asialink Leaders Program Alumni dinner was held in Melbourne and Sydney respectively. 65 Alumni were joined by 30 graduating fellows from the 2010 Leaders Program and 25 representatives of the Asia Education Foundation’s Asia Literacy Ambassadors project.

Hosted by PricewaterhouseCoopers, the event brought together Asialink Leaders Program Alumni from as far back as 1998, as well as many of our Melbourne and Sydney-based Asia Literacy Ambassadors. The evening offered a chance for guests to reconnect with friends and Alumni colleagues, to meet like-minded professionals and to reinvigorate their connection to Asialink.
Networking over drinks and dinner was characterised by prolific exchanges of business cards, with many guests discovering valuable new contacts. In Melbourne we heard updates from Alumni Jane Sharwood (City of Melbourne) and Michelle Phillips (Optus) and from Asia Literacy Ambassador Ross Ciaravalo (Food Advantage Consulting Services). In Sydney, Alumni Simon Wellington (City of Sydney) and Dilhani Bandaranayake (Sydney Medical School) and Asia Literacy Ambassador Karen Cheng (PwC) shared their stories of recent workplace successes and challenges.
The highlight of the evening was The Great Debate, where guests pitted themselves against each other to determine whether or not Australia is an influential player in the Asia region.
Key evidence for Australia’s lack of influence was cited as the fact that while there are many Chinatowns and Little Koreas in cities all over the world, there are no “Australiatowns” in Asia. Similarly, Australia’s lack of understanding of and poor skill levels in the sport of badminton shows how little power we have. Arguments for the affirmative side included the convincing UBI Index (see below), which charts the increasing sales of Ugg boots in China.

The winning argument was awarded on the basis of the volume of whistles from the audience. The tough but bribable Dr Margaret Byrne, herself a veteran of many Oxford debates, adjudicated.
Unfortunately, the outcome of the debate in both Melbourne and Sydney showed that Australia has little influence in the Asia region, so there is still much work to be done!
The door prize, generously supplied by Jetstar Airways, was awarded to Mariel Beros in Melbourne and Damien Spry in Sydney.
Overall, the evening was a great success and will continue as an Asialink tradition in the years to come.
