Asialink presents Soundtracks, a project by solo artist Dylan Martorell that will tour Asia 2011-2012. Melbourne-based Martorell participated in the 2011 Jakarta Biennale: Maximum city - Survive or Escape? (15 December 2011 – 15 January 2012), where he presented an exhibition of nomadic vehicles that explored the human journey and material refuse. Martorell will also take the nomadic project to Chiang Mai, Thailand and Kerala, India for the Kochi Muziris Biennale in 2012. Illustrating an active practical demonstration of the long-held investigation into the concept of musical diaspora in his practice, Dylan Martorell’s project focuses on the creation of a series of nomadic sculptural exhibitions and performance vehicles that will move across various locales. In Indonesia, the works were a combination of pedal powered vehicles and a hand-cart which incorporated modular architectural elements utilised to create various spaces for improvised and collaborative activities. These activities were a combination of musical, sculptural and social outcomes and aimed to target a wide demographic of viewers. Influenced by street-based examples of portable nomadic activities such as busking, street vending, homeless/disaster shelters, garbage collectors and everyday domestic social activities, Martorell is drawn to the ways in which music travels through space and is affected by changes in geography, materials, culture and climate to become an agent for cross cultural reciprocation. The work reflects the ways in which Asian cultures approach concepts of recycling, reusing and recontextualizing materials in a way in which developed Western countries have until recently had the luxury of ignoring. |
