The Sir Edward 'Weary' Dunlop Asialink Fellowships provide opportunities for young Australians who are committed to making a lasting contribution to Australia-Asia relations.
Fellowships provide a grant of up to $15,000 for an individually devised program in an Asian country in fields including, but not limited to:

The Fellowships recognise and reward excellence in individuals committed to tangibly enhancing Australia-Asia relations. They also help establish and expand networks between young Asia-skilled Australians in the Asia Pacific region. All contributions to the Dunlop Asia Awards Trust are tax deductible. |

Responsibilities

Travel, accommodation and insurance arrangements are the responsibility of the individual.

Sir Edward Weary Dunlop Asialink Fellows are expected to make a measurable contribution of community service, knowledge or expertise to their host country. This may be achieved either through their program or through personal involvement.

Additional employment or activities outside the designated program are only permitted with written permission from the Advisory Committee.

Fellows must submit a report within two months of completing their program.

Sir Edward 'Weary' Dunlop Asialink Fellows are required to return to Australia for at least 12 months after completing the designated program. During this time, they are to maintain an association with The University of Melbourne through Asialink and participate in selected activities in order to share their experiences and work with Asialink, The University of Melbourne and the broader community.
Financial Arrangements
The Fellowship grant covers airfares, insurance and a contribution to a living allowance. Any additional expenses are the responsibility of the individual. Applicants are encouraged not to include the costs of a laptop computer in the budget of their project.
The Fellowship does not provide for spouses or dependents to accompany Fellows during their placements in Asia.
Funds will be disbursed by Asialink in installments to ensure the program is completed in accordance with the proposed project. The final $1,000 of the award will be disbursed on receipt of a satisfactory report upon completion of the program.
Any tax liabilities incurred as a result of receiving a Fellowship are the responsibility of the awardee and the Commissioner of Taxation and must be dealt with by the individual concerned. Asialink bears no responsibility or authority in this matter. Applicants must also make their own arrangements for any visas that might be required.
Selection Criteria
Candidates must be:
- 21-40 years of age
- Australian citizens
- able to demonstrate commitment to a career with a regional focus
- physically fit and able to complete their program
Selection criteria include:
- merit / expertise in chosen field
- demonstrated commitment to community service
- leadership aspirations
- interest in public and social policy issues
- personal qualities such as balanced judgment, an international outlook and humanitarian concerns
- basic knowledge of regional culture
- relevance and utility of the program for the country host
- previous experience in Asia and language proficiency would be an advantage
The degree to which candidates can demonstrate the availability of other sources of financial support for their program may benefit their application. Such support may include employer or institutional assistance, other grant support and personal or family contributions.
Sir Edward 'Weary' Dunlop Asialink Fellows are selected by a panel consisting of senior representatives from government, academic, non-profit and business sectors.
Fellowships are tenable toward individually-devised work placements or projects, academic study or research programs. The Fellowships must be carried out under the supervision of a host-country government body, university, non-profit community organisation or private sector enterprise in one or more Asian countries.
PhD students may apply for the Dunlop Fellowship, however please note that the project must be outside of the normal scope of their PhD research.
Programs of up to 12 months duration are eligible.
